Proposed Constitution for the Georgia Regents University Lambda Alliance
Article I: Name
Section 1: The official name of the organization is “Georgia Regents University Lambda Alliance” which is the alliance for the lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgendered, queer, questioning, intersex (LGBTQQI) and straight ally community at Georgia Regents University (GRU) and within the local Augusta area. The “Augusta State University Lambda Alliance” will hereafter be referred to as “Lambda Alliance”.
Section 2: “Lambda Alliance” is equivalent in meaning to “Georgia Regents University Lambda Alliance, the Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, Transgendered, Queer, Questioning, Intersex and Straight Ally Student Organization.”
Article II: Purpose
Section 1: The Lambda Alliance presence serves to provide support and strength to LGBTQQI students both among one another as well as straight students who support them. The support will be built primarily on the education of issues that affecting the LGBTQQI community.
Section 2: The above stated purpose will be achieved by offering to the GRU students body a safe and welcoming environment for social congregation; by fostering social development through group functions and meetings; through providing resources for physical, mental and emotional support on campus as well as within the local community; through a variety of community service projects; and by increasing the awareness of social, political and legal issues involving the LGBTQ population.
Article III: Membership
Section 1: Membership in Lambda Alliance is open to all students enrolled at GRU, regardless of race, ethnicity, color, age, gender identity, disability, appearance, religion, national origin, sexual orientation, political affiliation, and veteran status. Subsidiary membership can be extended to persons or groups within the local community, not currently affiliated with Georgia Regents University.
Section 2: Active membership is maintained by being registered on the group roster, and by attending at least ONE meeting and ONE function per a semester. Dues will also be collected in the amount of $10.00 per semester or $15.00 per year.
Section 3: Voting membership is limited to those members who are current Georgia Regents University students and who are holding an active membership status in Lambda Alliance.
Article IV: Officers
Section 1: The leadership board of Lambda Alliance consists of a President, Vice President, Secretary, Treasurer, Event Coordinator, and Public Relation’s Chair.
Section 2: A minimum institutional grade point average (GPA) of 2.5 and an active voting membership are the only requirements to be nominated for a position of President. All other positions will have a minimum institutional GPA of 2.25 and be active, voting members. All officers must maintain active status as a student at GRU. Withdrawing from school or being enrolled fewer than 3 semester hours will result in immediate dismissal from office.
Section 3: The duties of the President are to preside over all general and executive meetings; organize the agenda for all meetings in collaboration with the Secretary; authorize allocations of the organization’s funds under the advisement of the Treasurer; appoint committees; and call special meetings as needed.
Section 4: The duties of the Vice President are to act as parliamentarian for the organization; enforce the constitution; to preside in lieu of the President at his/her request or absence; and to assume the duties of the President should the office becomes vacant.
Section 5: The duties of the Secretary are to maintain electronic copy of the minutes of all general and executive meetings; transmit all minutes and accompanying documents via email to all members of Lambda Alliance; to keep a record of all memberships rosters and their current voting status’; to notify members via e-mail and social media of all meetings, events and other notifications prescribed by the President; organize the agenda for all meetings in collaboration with the president.
Section 6: The duties of the Treasurer are to keep an active and updated record of the financial status of the organization; to keep a record of all transactions made by the organization; to present a financial report at the beginning of each meeting; to authorize and sign, in addition to the President or Vice President, all monetary transactions made on behalf of Lambda Alliance, and to assist the Secretary in all the aforementioned responsibilities.
Section 7: The duties of the Event Coordinator are to schedule, advertise, and promote all Lambda Alliance events; to schedule rooms for meetings at a time and place decided by all executive officers; to secure venues for Lambda Alliance events.
Section 8: The duties of the Public Relation’s Chair are to represent the group publicly to include media coverage. The Public Relation’s Chair is responsible for designing and posting advertisements on Lambda behalf both on campus and in the community. The Public Relation’s Chair should assist the Event Coordinator in all the aforementioned responsibilities.
Section 9: The duration of each office is ONE complete academic year, beginning with at the start of the Fall semester and concluding at the end of the Spring semester.
Section 10: Elections of new officers will be held at the second to last monthly meeting of each Spring semester. Nominations can be made by individual members of Lambda in favor of themselves or another member, with the acceptance of said nomination by the nominated party. The President will organize the ballot. Ballots will be cast secretly. All ballots will be counted by the faculty advisor and then the President. The results will be announced at the same meeting by the President. The newly elected officials will not take office until the following Fall semester. The Outgoing Administration shall collaborate with the Incoming Administration during the Summer semester which will serve as a transient period for the group. Both Administrations shall be active and responsible for planning for Augusta Pride during this time.
Section 11: Removal of officers: In the event an officer is not successfully carrying out the duties of his/her office, hindering the progress of the above purpose, or a majority of members deem necessary said officer maybe removed from office by a 2/3-majority vote of officers present during a special meeting that can be called by any officer, so long as he/she notifies all officer via email at least one week prior to special meeting, or at the next scheduled officers meeting. In the event an officer is, in fact, removed from office there will be a special election held at the next members meeting following the removal of officer to fill vacant seat.
Article V: Meetings
Section 1: General meetings will be held AT LEAST once a month, at the place and time decided upon by the officers.
Section 2: Executive meetings will be held AT LEAST once a month, prior to the monthly general meeting, at a place and time decided by the President in collaboration with the other officers. Attendances at the executive meetings are MANDATORY for all officers unless notification was sent in advance with a sound reason for absence.
Article VI: Amendments
Section 1: Any proposed amendments to this constitution must be presented in writing to the executive board and faculty advisor to be taken under consideration.
Section 2: Any amendments proposed for this constitution will be discussed with the entire organization with a majority (2/3 vote) allowing for the adoption of proposed amendment(s).
